Quinn is currently under the care of Dr. Paul Gaynon and his team at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). First off, we would like to thank Mark Schwartz, Dr. E. Carlisle (Tarzana ER), and Dr. Gullub (Los Robles Pediatrics) for making the calls that got Quinn into the care of arguably the finest Pediatric Oncologist group in the world. We sincerely thank you. We would also like to thank Kerry and Leah Cox. At the moment of truth... while our worst fears were coming true...
you provided strength and wisdom.

Quinn has always been a happy, healthy, and energetic baby girl. So this news came as a shock to us. Quinn was diagnosed with Pre-B ALL Leukemia on Tuesday, January 13th. This diagnosis was officially confirmed at CHLA on the following Thursday through a bone marrow and spinal fluid aspiration. Fortunately this type of Leukemia has a good prognosis. The national survival rate is above 85% and here at CHLA it’s around 90%. However, in the event of relapse the survival rate drops below 35%.

Rachel and I are living here at CHLA with Quinn. We never want her to be alone. She has already received three chemo treatments since Wednesday. Working with Dr. Gaynon and his team, we've decided on a very aggressive treatment plan. Quinn will receive Chemo every week for 6 months (with the exception of this week with 4 treatments). If all goes well Quinn can come home in 5-7 days from now and Rachel and I will continue treatment from home. Quinn will still need to go to CHLA weekly for her Chemo treatments. This means our home will be transformed into a "clean environment” due to Quinn’s low white blood cell count and consequent non-existent immune system. We will install hepa filters throughout, disinfect all surfaces routinely, and no persons sick and/or contagious can come in contact with Quinn. The concept behind this strategy is to sacrifice the very unpleasant and dangerous side effects of chemo for a 5% reduction in the chance of relapse. As long as Rachel and I are diligent in our care and attention, infections can be detected and suppressed with medications. These way potentially serious and/or fatal side effects can be avoided. Quinn's chemo treatments will last 2-3 years if all goes well. For now, we will do everything in our power to provide a positive, safe, and healthy environment for Quinn.
