The Sherry Family lives in Canoga Park, California. Daniel's mother has been a first grade teacher and a substitute teacher at Hart Elementary, and his father teaches mathematics at the College of the Canyons. Together, they also have a three year old daughter.
On March 28, 2011, their happy, bright, and healthy son, Daniel, was enjoying Kindergarten when the onset of severe back pains eventually led to a terrifying diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He will need chemotherapy for 3 1/2 years total, until the end of 2014.
Their journey began with a trip to the ER room for severe back and abdomen pain. After blood work, x-rays, and a CT scan was completed; the parents were told it might just be constipation. He was discharged late that evening, as all the tests came back normal. Several days passed and he seemed to feel a little better. Monday morning came, his knees buckled and he collapsed in agony. After a long week of seeing different specialists, the debilitating back pain did not subside. Instead, it became paralyzing and he couldn't move. He was admitted to their local hospital for an MRI.
The following morning, the MRI scan showed he had four fractures in his vertebrae. The doctor came in, her eyes welled up with tears, as she told them the fractures were severe enough that he needed to be transferred immediately to Children's Hospital for further testing.
A few days later, a bone marrow aspirate was done and this family's entire world as they knew it, changed forever: Daniel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia which had infiltrated his bones and caused the compression fractures in his vertebrae. He was in a back brace for 6 weeks and couldn't walk during that time.

Daniel's battle with leukemia will be long and at times painful, but he remains brave and continues to endure his treatments.
This family humbly asks for your support, prayers, and positive thoughts to get them through the next unimaginable 3 1/2 years.
